Clayton Mission Volunteer in Haiti

requests donations and supplies

A member of Horne Memorial United Methodist Church in Clayton who is on her 43rd mission trip to Haiti continues to send e-mail messages about the devastation and needs on this poor Caribbean nation following earthquake damage.

Helen Little, 77, is on a Mission to Haiti team out of Miami, Fla. She has written that she and five other people with her are safe: Linda Mitchell and Joan Gregg from Epworth UMC in Durham and Darlene Lee, Steve Wales and Ann Collier from Whitley Memorial in Smithfield.

The Rev. Dr. Sam Dixon, a clergy member of the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church and head of the United Methodist Committee on Relief, is also in Haiti. He was on his way to the airport in Port-Au-Prince when the earthquake occurred. No word has been received about his safety.

The Mission to Haiti team is outside Port-Au-Prince near the airport. Little said the destruction is extensive and there are many deaths. The team she is with includes medical personnel. They are providing all the assistance they can but are running short of medical and other supplies.

The team leader has sent an e-mail that he has talked with the Coast Guard in Miami and hopes they can deliver supplies.

Little requested specific supplies, donations, and prayers. Donations can be made to assist Haiti through designated contributions at any United Methodist Church. Write Haiti on the memo line or write Advance # 418325. On-line donations can be made at new.gbgm-umc.org/umcor or by calling the Advance office (212-870-3790).

Horne Memorial in Clayton is collecting supplies and has arranged for a private flight to leave for Haiti on Thursday morning. Medical supplies are the immediate need on this flight. Clothing is not need at this time. Items for Horne should be delivered to Carolina Graphic Printing at 501 Atkinson Street, Clayton. Volunteers are also needed to work with the supplies.

Supplies can also be delivered to MERCI, the conference disaster relief warehouse at 676 Community Drive in Goldsboro. Supplies to Horne that do not get on the flight to Haiti will be taken to MERCI for shipment.

Immediate medical supplies requested from physicians on the team are:

Plastic or Fiberglass Casting
Suture 3-0,4-0 Nylon
Suture Instrument Kits
Betadine
4×4 Dressing
Roll Gauze
Web Roll for Casting
Saline IV and Irrigation
Injectible Pain Medication
Injectible Antibiotics IV and IM Rocephin, Ancef, Kflex

External Fixture

Traction Bows and Pins

Non-medical needs include:

Blankets
Sheets
Towels
Wash Clothes
Health Kits*
Food
Tarps

*A Health Kit contains specific items:
1 hand towel (15” x 25” up to 17” x 27”)
1 wash cloth
1 comb (large and sturdy, not pocket-sized)
1 nail file or fingernail clippers (no emery boards or toenail clippers)
1 bath-size bar of soap (3 oz and up)
1 toothbrush (single brush only in original wrapper; no child-sized brushes)
1 large tube of toothpaste
6 adhesive plastic strip sterile bandages
All items should be placed inside a sealed one-gallon plastic bag. No other items should be included in the Health Kit

Spread the word about the January 5 fundraiser at the Cary Town Center Chick-fil-a. Download the flyer from the White Plains UMC youth site – print it off and invite your whole church! You need to bring a copy of this coupon with you when you come so make lots of copies!

Hey folks – please spread the word – there are now two chances to support the District Youth Mission Fair. The first will be in North Raleigh on Tuesday, December 15 at the Triangle Town Centre location from 5-8PM. The second is at the Cary Town Center location on Tuesday, January 5th. Please spread the word – please help us by contacting your church and your community to get them out to this event. Where else can you help stop hunger by eating?

New Chick-fil-a Fundraiser announced for the Mission Fair!

On Thursday, December 3rd we will have a spirit night fundraiser at the Chick-fil-a at Cary Towne Center mall food court. Please invite all your friends – all you need to do is eat at the Chick-fil-a that night and say that you are supporting the Methodist youth and we will receive a portion of the funds you spend. All proceeds from this fundraiser are going toward underwriting the cost of our meal packaging event on Sunday, January 10 at the Distrit Youth Mission Fair. You can RSVP to this event or send invitations to it through the event page on facebook.
